Exactly.
From what I've seen in the past 10 years, GW have been known to delay the release of several sets - but that concerned Warhammer (either type) figures. With those, they can easily wait several years, knowing (and entirely controlling) the relevance of those figures many years down the road. Even with some optimism, it is unlikely that they have much of a long-term strategy as far as The Hobbit is concerned, so unless the moulds broke (something that has been known to occur, albeit very rarely), anything planned for The Hobbit will be released in the next 12 months or so. There almost certainly will be plastics (not as many as for Warhammer releases, but probably not less than there were for LotR) and plenty of resin figures - after all, where would the Perry twins otherwise have been working on until they left a few months back?

And indeed, limited availability is only a problem if the number is actually low. Without any information on the actual numbers (nor indeed the demand), there is little reason to worry in advance.

I'd hope to see some new plastics, especially if they were of the quality and scale of the Warriors of Dale or Grimhammers. However, I am aware of how unlikely that is.

I wonder if the Palace Guard were initially supposed to be more involved in the big "escape down the river" sequence, hence the need for a plastic set? Such a set up might have justified 20 or so Palace Guards to go with the Mirkwood Rangers.

I did come to the realisation this morning that if GW released High Elves in finecast...I might just suck it up and get some. Damnit.

Holy christ they're some good looking sculpts.

As per the extra Legolas & thauriel don't bring anything to the table in my opinion...would of preferred brand new models/characters.

Everything else looks great

All i can say is wow... So much finecast, but sooo much epic minis. Wallet will cry... Surely these will be staggered over the next 2 or 3 weeks? Love the new tauriel and thranduil!

Except now Legolas can take Orcist making him a combat beast as well as the best ranged character in the game, he is now SO OP...

I hope they're not staggered I am keen for them all quickly haha.

But in all seriousness it looks to be a race by race release.

They have to do:

Mirkwood Elves
Gundabad Orcs and Trolls
Dol Guldor Orcs and Trolls
Iron Hills Dwarves
Lake Town Remnants
Sauron and the 9 Wraiths
The White Council
Lothlorien/High Elves that besiege Dol Guldor with the White Council
Armour Company of Dwarves
Armoured Bolg and Azog with Bodyguards
Bats
7 Gandalf poses
More?

It could easily be a race a month for a year or more. The elves are in finecast because they already have other troop choices (rangers and palace guards).

I meant visually opposed too gameplay really.

"oh look, a sculpt of Legolas, dressed in green! That's new".....

I want a badass looking Armoured legolas, similar to the new cavalry models.

Oh dear, my wallet is going to hurt this week, but looking at those mini's its well worth it! , only thing is thats only one of the armies that is coming! I suspect this will be the biggest release of minis we will see, purely just on the elves alone. Bring on the armoured Thorin's company, Cant wait to get these on the table and recreate that epic battle.

I would have cringed but simultaneously as an Elf Player would have loved to see Legolas in heavy armour with a shield on a horse with orcist. A D7 Legolas with Orcist on Horse would only be 35 points ontop of his base, would so do it......

It is pretty awesome anyway: legolas with orcrist on a horse. And with cavalry behind him.
