So where Smaug faces off against Bard in the film, he claws towards him over rooftops. I want to make it. Perhaps a foot square or just a bit less, Bard atop the tower with Bain and the Black Arrow, and Smaug being all Smaugy. All I need is how to make the section of burning Lake Town... I've been looking at buildings and the like, but need advice. Which buildings are necessary? I'm thinking a couple of burning ones framing Smaug and Bard on the burning tower on the other side with others as required around.

Will you be using the GW Smaug? That will be quite a big diorama! I like the look of the thomarillion buildings the best.

One of the problems I have when building a diorama is trying to make everything too realistic and building/buying more than is needed - I believe what makes a diorama work is the feel of what you are trying to accomplish. One idea you might want to think about is just doing rooftops and the tower with Bard - you could have the lower floors hidden by making smoke and fire to hide the fact that there aren't any.

I say this mainly because I wouldn't have the room to do what I would want, a full blown block of lake town with tower and Smaug!

The size you're talking about wouldn't accommodate the GW Smaug very well
