With the DVD release of Battle of Five Armies this week i have watched it again and really enjoyed it. I can't say i have the "Rose Tinted" view of Dr.Grant of the film, but having watched it on the small screen it plays better than it did in the Cinema.

I guess most of us have a different view of Middle Earth to Peter Jackson, but having watched all the films other the last few week i think no, he has not lost his touch, just done things his own way. So thanks Peter Jackson, look forward to the Extended Version.

I watched it for the first time today - yes, I did not see it on the big screen.
It was better than I expected, other than having the obvious discontinuities where the 'extended' version will restore the deleted scenes.

The normal version really ought to have been edited so it would still make sense. so much of it is confusing when watching it for the first time - the elves never use their bows? what happened to alfrid? thorin died, they blasted a trumpet and that's it? and where did the goating goats suddenly and conveniently come from?
i really feel it was rushed and pj and company just going, 'meh, they'll buy the extended edition anyway.'

Each company of dwarves was led by a captain on a goat. I'm pretty sure there were something like 4-6 goats when the dwarves first showed up.

Ah so they were there. You hardly notice them though.

By the way, does anyone know about when the extended cut will be released?

Late November if they continue the trend.

I must say, I disagree with almost all speakers so far. Not in that BotFA was unfaithful to the source material, or that they needed more character development, but EVEN AS a lightweight, unbelievable action movie, this is an atrocious example of film. I didn't go to the cinema for incredible (in a bad way) fight moves, round after round of reinforcements and deus ex machina, invincible heroes, and minimal dialogue, which is cringey at best.

This movie has forever marred my opinion of the Hobbit Characters, the storyline, the setting and Peter Jackson.

What ruined the Iron Hills dwarves for me was they were not filthy. Master Gimli specifically stated to Legolas that dwarves have to be filthy. It makes them fight harder, so something like that... :)

Are you watching the extended editions? DoS is sooo much better extended. I enjoyed them all, and I enjoyed DoS when I saw it, but seeing the extended DoS made it much better.

We liked the AUJ too. Its the DoS and the BofFA that mess up. The AUJ is great in most ways. It has the kind of "spirit" we wanted for the Hobbit films. There are a few things we dislike, but overall its much better than the last two and if PJ had continued with that trend, the movies could have been amazing. :) Most of the stuff we like from the Hobbit films comes from AUJ. We feel though that the DoS and BotFA are not quite like the AUJ and have less to like in them and most of our complaints are from those two films.

Will you watch both in one day? Sounds like fun. We once did all the Extended Lord of the Rings films in one day. That was really awesome. Start at breakfast finish at dinner. :D Still need to find enough time (and popcorn :) ) to do that with the Hobbit.

Yep we will watch DoS and BotFA starting as soon as the kids open their eyes 2moro. likely 5 in the morning lol.

I have watched all three extended Lotr movies back to back more times than i can remember and will no doubt do the same with the Hobbit movies. It is quite easy for me to do as I can often paint for 10 hours plus often straight through the night and know the Lotr movies that well that i don't need to look at the screen to know whats going on.

I love Middle Earth that much that I think it would need to be something extremely serious like the Teletubbies appearing and poking Thorin in the eye for me to not like the next 2 movies.

LOL! It was kinda like that for us. Teletubbies and Barnie wouldn't be outta place in some parts.
There's lots to enjoy in them though. We may complain lots  but we mostly enjoy watching the DoS and BotFA. Its nice to be in Middle-earth (even if its a different Middle-earth from what you hoped for). Hope you enjoy!

AUJ is definitely the best of the 3, but the other 2 are still pretty good, although DOS really needs to be seen with the extended scenes to be thoroughly enjoyed. Can't believe you waited this long to watch them. And I don't know about you guys, but I'm doing a 24 hour marathon this December with all 6 extended editions in one day.

I will also be doing all extended editions as soon as i get my hands on them.

In answer to the OP - Peter Jackson has definitely NOT lost his touch. These 3 movies have been totally fantastic, i don't see what all the complaints are about. Two words for you all.............

Excellent, glad you enjoyed them! I will say that DoS does benefit from the extended edition, simply as some of the best scenes are lengthened (Beorn and Dol Guldur, and a superb alternative opening), but yep, fantastic is the word. Can't wait for the extended BotFA either, just to wring every last moment of epicness from the trilogy.

If I weren't doing the obligatory annual Star Wars marathon today, I think AUJ would be going in the Blu-ray player about now...
