I know that some people don't want to waste time or money on terrain for their wargaming, but still don't want to play on a flat table.

I had bought some Woodland Scenics shaper sheet (http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics. ... 178/page/1) to play with and decided to see what I could do with it. In the US you can buy this at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon.

I cut off a 9in by 9in piece and colored it with some craft paint, then I crumpled it a little to dry brush on another color just to break up the monotony. It to dry for awhile, as it soaks up the paint and if you don't let it dry, you get it all over your hands as you shape it.



Once the paint was dry, I decided to see what I could do with it.

Could crumple the edge or leave it flat as just difficult terrain:



Make a small hill with it:



Make a quick mine entrance with it:



Cut the roll into several sizes, color brown/green or grey for rockier hills, add some terrain to your table for a relatively cheep price.

Word of caution, when you form it into a hill or mountain without support underneath, it does press in quite easily if you push a figure on top. Just placing a figure on it is ok. Could always fall back to the classic of putting a book on the table and forming the sheet around that.

Best of all, it lays flat or rolls again for storage.

Hi Mapper, did you use the shaper sheet plaster? I think it is supposed to harden your shaper sheet creation.

Thanks Stan158, no, I haven't used the plaster yet, still playing around with the shaper sheet to see if I want to use it on a project I want to keep or that needs to be more durable.

I think you might want to put the shaper sheet on some kind of form if you are layering it with plaster--check the manufacturer's instructions.

I use plaster of paris all the time--it's super cheap. Just water some down and paint it over top when you are happy with your shape. It will leave brush strokes, but a nice application of glue and dirt/sand/gravel/ballast/whatever will take care of that. I personally liked the rocks the best.

Took the rest of the shaper sheet I had and painted it charcoal and then dry brushed on some gray, tan and green.

I rolled up the sheet after it was dry and in between these shots - it is easy to store.



Will probably cut it into two sheets when I decide what I want to do with it. If I was to try this again I think I would have bought the wider sheet - more options would be available to shape.

First shot is an idea for the Betrayer's home ground. Bought the temple coin bank when I was in South Korea.

Took the first piece of Woodland Scenics Shaper Sheet I had cut off and used as a wall for the Moria mold I had just gotten from http://keeblerstudios.com/

I like to try things out first before deciding how/if I will do the final board. The main door I will have to do with wood to make it larger, this door could be a back way in or up on a ledge.

Took the shaper sheet and glued it to some corrugated cardboard, cut out where the door and columns were (the columns were set back a 1/4 inch) and then glued the whole thing to the floor and to the back of the mold.

Added some pumice for debris and to add some more texture to the wall. Sprayed the whole thing with grey paint and then some dry brushing. Easier for me than cutting insulation or doing a plaster wall.

I built a bridge for my dwarf set, to be used in a future layout when I can build some more walls. Looking at the bridge I tried to imagine what I could have underneath it, a deep chasm or some lava.

Took my piece of shaper sheet (again) and repainted it (again) using craft paint. Used a round object to press the lava channels then dry brushed various oranges, reds and black on top. The texture of the shaper sheet makes it easy to dry brush.

Just a quick test of making a lava flow.

Would you be able to use a gloss medium over it?

That's a very cool idea. That would be very useful for making a Mount Doom/Mordor board.

Are you thinking of just using the shaper sheet without using water effects products on top - just paint? I would think it would work, let me pull out another scrap and see how it looks.

No, actually I was wondering if the sheet would tolerate various "water " products.
Or will they leak?
