Almost a year ago I bought two sets of Warriors of Dale and their Captain. I like to have a scenario in my mind when I paint and use the figures but didn't quite know what to do with them. I decided to go somewhat with the description of what GW said, protecting their homeland and being seen on ships. With that in mind, I decided to build a Lake Town barge to ferry the Warriors of Dale along the Long Lake to patrol for orcs. Since GW/Forge World is releasing their Lake Town House soon, I thought I better get busy and try building the barge. Luckily I have a hobby show nearby that sells bass wood cheap as I went through a lot of it learning how to build my barge.

I started out using cardboard to get the size I wanted - it had to hold at least 15 figures (bargeman plus Thorin's Company or a warband of Dale). I then build a dock to get the height of the barge right. The dock I built was one long abandoned on the River Running below Dale.



I went through several iterations of the barge base and framework and bought some hobby size clamps and a proper tool to bend the wood around before I got it where I am happy with it.

Every plank is an individual size piece of bass wood. Might have over done it with the one stain but it is a working barge...







The bargeman is the spearman from the Lake Town militia and the figure head is a seahorse charm. Still have to do some work on the tiller/rudder and need to size out the mast/sail.

The fish came from the Lake Town Militia Captain spruce. Made a press mold of the fish then a mold of them on a barrel. Used extra press mold fish to add on top. I had wondered when I would ever use those pieces.

Weathered the barge some more by dry brushing on Vallejo Old Wood, decided I didn't like the helmeted figure for a bargeman so I swapped heads with a lake-town militia archer. Still have to figure out what I want to do for the mast and sail.

I use eye hooks to make the sails removable.

Wah Wing - Thanks, trust me - they all don't work out well. This one I thought I had thought out before trying, but ended up ripping up the bow and stern several times, redoing the underlying support, etc. What saved me was getting the right materials (bass vs balsa wood) for this project and the right tools. Balsa wood was too soft and squished around the pegs when bent. I tried bending the bass wood around push pins stuck in cardstock at first but that didn't work so I got a Thing-A-Ma jig at a local craft store. Yes, that is it's actual name. It is a metal stand with holes to put pegs in that is used for bending wire designs but worked for me to shape the bow and stern. I cut the "planks" to a little longer than needed, boiled them in a measuring cup full of water in the microwave for five minutes then shaped them around the pegs. Took a few times to get everything right.

GreatKhanArtist - Because this was wood that I wanted to try and age, I bought from Micro-Mark (great mail order store for hobbyists - shipping rather expensive and a very dangerous catalog to get) some Age-it Easy Brown and Gray liquids. It is for raw wood and soaks very easy into the bass wood. You can measure how dark or light you want it by slowly brushing the liquid in. I felt it wasn't aging it enough or not quite the color I wanted so I dry brushed Vallejo #310 Old Wood on it to get the more brown/green effect I wanted. The darker color on the ribs and thicker planks is Vallejo 72.042 Parasite Brown.

All in all a very challenging project to do, but I am happy with the results. Making one out of cardstock would be so much easier though.

I never remember to use the microwave

You can also weather wood with a solution made with vinegar and steel wool. Antique forgers use it to make new wood look old.
I am going to use this method for the 3D Inn on the back side of the Conan Boardgame tile.

I like the Idea of the barge I will cut mine from a pine common board and use a wood burner to give the illusion of planking.

Been in a hobby lull lately, have several projects I need to finish painting but can't seem to pick up the paint brush. Been doing other stuff to avoid the paint brush - pinning horses, etc.

The lake town house has been bothering me, I never was a fan of diamond windows and why GW wasted plastic on a privy is beyond me.

Original house, just dry fitted together.



Took the privy to add to the side and its door to the second floor. At some point will cut out the space for the door and add a frame to the top.



Added a balcony - knocked this out in a day.



Another shot, build it to make it easier to paint the house and the balcony separate. Still need to nick it up some to get rid of the squareness of the posts, etc.



Really need to finish painting a project for my son and the warriors of dale - have started ordering various things for my next big project but need to finish up other things first.
