After some time away from the hobby I decided it was time to jump back in, and with a bang at that!

The pictures below are the WIP shots for a 3D campaign map focused around Gondor and Mordor. At this point I just wanted to get the pictures uploaded, but more of a narrative about the process and where I see this going will come soon!

All of this was done on a 1" piece of pink insulation foam mounted to a 2'x2' plywood board. The idea is to eventually make a few more and get more of Middle Earth involved!

Please let me know what you think!

Thanks for looking!

Awesome project! Can't wait to see this progress. :yay:
I'm just curious, how did you get the idea? Also from this website? http://www.hourofwolves.org/?view=campa ... page=setup

I have also made some 3D campaign maps years ago, along with lots of armies, cities and everything. It went from Edoras to Umbar and from Dol Amroth to Mount Doom. I wrote an article on making it, I can send it if you like?

Thank you!

I would love to see yours. In fact, it was probably the inspiration for mine. When I began planning out this project I started looking for pictures I had seen here in the past. I could not find them, and eventually saw the pictures in the link you provided!

Hi guys,

I've been on the road all week and haven't had the time to do much with this board until this afternoon. After getting everything glued in place in my last set of pictures I took the time to apply (generously and sloppily) spackle to the waterways, some of the flat plains, and lastly, the mountains.

After all this dries I am going to sand it down to where it looks just right, and then start texturing the board!

Look for the pictures soon!

It's always great to see people's work who I've inspired! Biggest compliment one can get. :) That said, I didn't come up with the idea of making such a map (see the link in my previous comment). Neldoreth / rev from Hourofwolves was my inspiration.

Anyway, here's a ton of pictures from my campaign maps:

I will also have a look at the article I wrote and put it up somehow. :)

Keep up the good work!

It seems this thread might be better suited for the WIP forum, so if a mod sees this, please feel free to move it!

After a quick break from my earlier work I decided to get a second project going! This one will be a modular board (sort of) and will feature a city/wall/fields.

There are updates coming regarding the campaign map soon! Stay tuned.

Hirst blocks strike again! What are you casting with?

I wouldn't worry too much about which thread this is in, but when you change what you are working on you should edit your first entry and change the title.

Keep up the good work!

Currently using DAP Plaster of Paris. It isn't the strongest material but it does the trick- I really have no complaints thus far! I am at a stand still now on this project, however, as I am waiting for a mold to arrive in the mail.

I have started to paint up the campaign map and will likely post some pictures tomorrow!

Big update on the campaign map!

The past few days have been very productive. I managed to paint the board and apply most of the grass to areas I wanted to. The only things remaining are some touch up and the strategic markers!

Looking great! My only negative comment is the wall section in the photo with the KoDA standing in front. It's my experience if you don't interlock the bricks, the finished product is weaker and the walls are more wobbly and less straight. Maybe you're having better luck. Hope you're having better luck than I on that regard.

Keep posting those WIPs!

Thanks! Due to the design of the front, those 5 blocks are not able to interlock. Rest assured the remaining do.

More updates to come early next week!

This is fantastic. I'm interested, after applying spackle to the entire thing, how do you create the smoother texture in the photo where the whole map is painted brown?

It's really impressive.

If you're talking about the sea and rivers, not much was done after the spackle was applied other than a light sanding to get rid of any hard edges. The same was done for the mountains; however, I left some of the more pronounced clumps alone to create a more natural look. The land masses were not sanded because I applied sand on top of them.

I have some more pictures to upload, and will do so shortly!
