JULY 2017 - THE ELVEN HAVENS

*This will be a single miniature challenge.

1. To enter the painting challenge, the miniature you are painting must not be painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-painted' (unprimed, undercoated or if you are repainting and old miniature - in its' original paint scheme) otherwise your entry will not be eligible.

2. You may join the painting challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of the completed miniature by midnight GMT of July 30th 2017. WIP images are welcomed and encouraged. A maximum of 4 photos of your completed entries please, this allows you to show your miniatures off from front, back and each side which is more than enough. If you would like to compile more than four pictures into one file it is ok to do that

3. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed miniatures. Votes should be cast not simply on painting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of painting techniques, artist improvement, etc. There is no prize available for the winners of this challenge, the challenge is solely for community participation and as an incentive for people to reduce their backlog and improve their painting skills.

4. With the introduction of The League Winners from the previous month are now eligible to enter and win consecutive challenges without penalty.

Good luck and have fun!

Yay! A good chance for me to finally paint Legolas from Heroes of Helms Deep, bought when it was released 15 years ago!

Nice entry joshuar_au, your bold highlights made me want to try bring up the cloak on Legolas more than I usually do, still ended up quite soft, but I think thats just my style. :)

Below are the photos of my finished Legolas that I repainted yesterday. In hindsight I think I should have painted the eyes bigger.

Absolutely love GTC's cloak on his Legolas. I'd love to have that formula to try out on some dwarf rangers! My Celeborn just came in the post, so if I get a chance, I'll see about painting him up this weekend. I've got dwarves on the brain, though. I'm having a great time with them.

Hey GreatKhanArtist, Thanks! I followed the old Best of White Dwarf: Two Towers article on how to paint him but with a few newer paints.

The cloak was a base of Waagh flesh, a light wash of Agrax Earthshade in the folds, then Waagh flesh again and highlighted by mixing in Codex grey to the green until almost pure codex grey to finish.

It was strange following an old article by GW, their painting method has changed a lot over time, it used to use a lot of highlighting by mixing in grey or bleached bone. I think its still a good technique, quite subtle and somewhat realistic.

That's so true. I was looking through my collection of old magazine articles this morning, and there is quite a bit of difference in techniques from 2006 to 2016. Both have merit. I do find there is some frustration in mixing paints, especially when doing an army. Since GW doesn't use droppers, it's hard to get the amounts right. There also seems to be a push in making the hobby more newb friendly. The paint techniques are simpler than they used to be. Other manufacturers are on this wagon, too. Privateer Press's articles have changed in ways that mimic GW's in the same amount of time.
