I would say Eomer. Hes a great fighting hero and hes cheaper than Gandalf.

Unless you're expecting to really use specific spells, Eomer is the winner. I have been on the recieving side of a couple games w/ him leading a force of mostly mounted Rohan. He has good stats, blends with the rest of the forces ( no need to hold him back ) and when played right his Heroic actions combined with horse maneuverability and charge attacks are highly destructive.

Not to mention that a mounted Gandalf is 180pt. Mounted Eomer w/ shield is 90. That's 6 more Riders with wargear which is a serious amount of strenght. Or perhaps a banner or second captain for more flexibility.

In a 500pt army t's hard to justify a single model that costs more than 35% of your total. If you include Gandalf just be sure you are doing it because your strategy centers around using his magical talents otherwise you have a VERY costly leader.

Yep, Eomer every time. I have used him to plough through formations of Uruk-Hai with ease, and he does it well.

Maybe try Eorl and Captain. Or only Eorl. My friend plays that roster, and his army is good ;)

If you like to play with Spells and a Hero that isn't really in the middle of the battle, choose Gandalf. If you want a real Warrior, choose Eomer.

My choise would be Eomer, because he rides with the other warriors and he can use his Might Points to help the other Riders of Rohan. Gandalf mostly uses his Might Points not to help others, but to use them for himself.

for your choice of points, I'd say Eomer. But although not tested Erkenbrand may be a nice prospect.

Of the two I would choose Eomer backed up by another captain. I currently play with Eomer and Gamling with several RoR, but back them up with some footmen to make the army more flexible and increase the break point. Eomer leads the horse and Gamling leads the foot.

But the entire point of a Riders of Rohan army is so that your entire army can outmanoeuvre the opponent's. I simply can't see the point of taking Warriors of Rohan in a Rohan army if the majority is Riders.

Thanks guys. How about Gandalf the Grey on horseback or Legolas on horse as they are good strong characters considerably cheaper in points than Gandalf the White, plus I would conbine the one character with a banner bearer and captain...

Thanks for your input.

Any Gandalf model will be over priced for this army unless you really want his spell powers.

Legolas isn't too bad if you are packing RoR with bows but really it doesn't make a lot of sense from a theme perspective. At least w/ Gandalf you could say it's him leading the RoR back to Helms Deep and adventures he has along the way. But to put an Elf in charge of the Riders with no real cause...

I would say it depends who you are playing. If you are playing against an uruk army with saruman in tow, I would go for gandalf because I hate having nothing to resist spellcasters. Eomer will just be commanded by saruman. If there is no saruman then i cannot justify the points for gandalf, and would go for eomer who is a competent fighter.

If Saruman is in the Isengard army, then you can simply go round the flank with Eomer and a detachment of Riders, and squish, no more Saruman.

Thanks guys for all the help. Also do you think it is good to have a named character (but your stuck with a cirtain aged force) or a created profiled captain which you can really make your own?

Many Thanks.

Named characters are usually better but then again its always fun to have a guy thats all your own. You could always make up a back ground and model and ask your opponent if you could use the certain hero rules for your home made model.
