Hey all, I have a few questions regarding these beasties.

I understand they are quite a bit larger than the older LoTR ones? Are they really on a 60mm base?

They're "Fine"cast? Has anyone had/ seen any issues with them?

Have their profiles in the new book remained the same, as Gandalf, Saruman and Radagast's did?

Would you consider these to fit better in a Mordor list or a Moria list over, say, the old metal ones?

I don't have the book with their profiles but I do know they are weaker, cost more points and indeed are on the larger base

I have 2 boxes of them and they are perfectly cast. They are on 60mm.

Statwise, mostly the same but halve the fight value, shorter movement range, -1 courage, and the ability to shoot webs which Paralyse (like the spell).
Unfortunately the webs have a short range, can only be done in the shoot phase, and the Spider has a poor shoot value, coupled with lower stats and higher pts, you'd struggle to find them effective.

Are there any benefits to them at all?

They don't have to be led by a warband leader.

They look good for me, but they have not so good stats. I could use them as proxies tho.

Really, couldn't they be used in conjunction with the older profile in a Mordor or Moria list?

I have read the arguments about effectiveness of the Mirkwood spiders. I think most of the opinions have been based on on open field points matches. They are meant to be used with a lot of woodland terrain.
I would keep the Moria spiders on the smaller base and count them as different creatures.
I am making 18 bases from plastic spiders. I have not used them yet.

Ooh, that's a nice spider, Charles! Any idea on the scale? It was difficult to tell from the picture. If that would look good on a 60mm base, I'd definitely do up some of those as Mirkwoods.

How would that make any difference? The LotR Ginat Spiders can have he same rule regarding moving through difficult terrain so they're still better than the Mirkwood/Hobbit ones. In fact, due to larger base size, they don't fit through as much terrain as the older ones.

I am however, a supporter of anyone who wants to use them.

They will work fine. I don't have a photo on the hard drive. I will post a photo when I get home.

I have these spiders and they make an excellent proxy for the Mirkwood Spiders. Here are some pics

Image
Sitting on 60mm bases.

Image
Moria Spiders for Scale, I really need to get these finished.

Image
More Reaper Bones spiders. What is not to love, 2 spiders for $2.50

Image
Sitting on 40mm bases.

Image
Together for scale, they are a little smaller but still work.

Image
Adding in D&D Pre-Painted DeathJump Spider for another possible proxy.

Image
All together now!

Image
Added in my newest additions to the White Council for scale, Glorfindel, Erestor and Elrond.

Cheers, Xin

Awesome pics, Xintao! I try to collect all the models to play the scenarios and the amount of money needed to purchase 18 Mirkwood Spiders is simply unreal. These spiders, though, will work quite nicely and won't break the bank either.

Cheers, sir!

The Swarms look pretty good, too. Did you make that 60mm base?
